"Big Shot" by Sheridan Newsom

Snuggled up in my warm bed on a cold November morning, I was awakened by my father. It was time for my first big hunt. I had looked forward to this day for a long time, and it was finally here. My father and I were both excited as we got ready for the big day. Dressed in my new hunting gear, we set out to begin our first father-daughter hunt.

After stopping for gas and a quick donut, we arrived at our hunting spot. As we were waiting in the tall grass for the sun to rise, I was thankful my clothing was insulated; for I was already nearly freezing in the below zero weather. As we waited, my dad told me that the fresh blanket of snow would allow for good tracking. As the sun began to peak over the mountains, a few deer became visible feeding by the haystack. However, I did not have a good shot at any of them. Anyway's, they were much too small for my liking. I was on a mission to kill a bigger buck then my mom ever had.

After watching the deer, my dad realized that there was a doe in heat, which meant if there was a bigger buck in the area, he would be sure to find this doe. So we began to stalk to doe. After watching the doe for what seemed like forever; sure enough came two big bucks. As I prepared for my shot, my heart began to race. However, my shot was delayed as the two bucks began to fight. As I set my gun up on my bi-pod, my dad told me I must wait for them to stop fighting. As the bucks turned broad sided, horns still locked, I decided to fire at the bigger one of course. As I pulled the trigger, my heart began to race even faster. But, to my surprise, I missed! After my first big shot, the deer separated and I chambered another round into my 243 rifle and prepared to take another shot. At the sound of the shot, the buck fell to the ground. The second shot was a clean kill shot. As we approached the deer cautiously, my father had me check to be sure the deer was dead by poking the deer in the eye with the tip of the rifle. My dad told me this was a common practice, but I felt this was unnecessary because of my great shooting skills and the fact I was using the ammo my dads builds at his ammunition factory. My father told me that now that the deer was dead, the real-work begins. I will skip those gory details.

I had just killed my first big buck. I had set out to kill a bigger buck then my mom ever had, and I had more than succeeded by killing an even bigger buck than my father. My dad told me not to expect such success each hunting season, but little does he know he has his work cut out for him because I will not settle for anything smaller than last years’. I am excited to hunt for many years to come because it is a great sport that allows you to spend time with your family and/or friends. I would recommend hunting to everyone and anyone.
